Truth in Titles: The Impact of Accurate Job Titles
Before submitting an application for a senior leadership role, spend a few minutes reviewing and updating your resume. In addition to adding key highlights in your experience, make sure your job titles are also accurate. If you have a mid-level title, but your role includes duties similar to those of a senior-level position, don't put down a director or C-level title on your resume because you "act" like one. Candidates that exaggerate titles will leave a bad impression on employers that discover these facts during an interview, reference call, or formal HR application — where even the smallest falsehood can be grounds for immediate dismissal. If you see yourself in the light of a higher title, then put all that energy and effort into presenting yourself as that kind of candidate during an application. There’s an old adage in business: under promise and over deliver. Candidates that adhere to this mantra often leave a very positive impression on a prospective employer and get the ultimate good news they seek at the end of a hiring process.
