First Impressions: Navigating Early Interview Questions
Interviews are like blind dates. They are an opportunity to learn about a possible partner for the first time and search for a potential spark. Asking questions is always encouraged, as it shows your interest in an organization through meaningful dialogue. However, just like you would avoid sharing early demands on a blind date lest you scare the other person away, you have to be cautious with your early questions to a potential employer. Demanding to know what your schedule would be like, seeking detailed benefits information, or looking for confirmation about whether you're the right fit will all be overwhelming to someone who is just getting to know you. And it rarely helps to tell your interviewer that you have lined up other dates — a.k.a. interviews — in an attempt to create early leverage. Sometimes you have to show your comfort with early ambiguity or uncertainty, and wait until the next encounter to start exploring more uncomfortable topics. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression!
